Individual Taster Sessions l Traditional and Composition l Music and Dance
Music and Shadow Puppetry l Children, Young People, and Adults with Learning Difficulties
In Service Training/Teacher Training

 

  1. The variety of gamelan workshops below are designed for school children (from Key Stage 2 and above), community groups, college and university students, and for people of all abilities.
  2. If you do not have gamelan instruments at your school/college, GO GAMELAN! will provide a set of gamelan instruments.
  3. Gamelan workshops are tailor-made according to your needs.
  4. Gamelan workshops are designed for between 15 to 30 participants, for minimum of a 1.5 hour session (with an optional short break in the middle of the session as appropriate).
  5. Towards the end of the workshop participants will be encouraged to give a short performance based on the material that they have learned in the workshop.

Individual Taster Sessions

  • Learning traditional Javanese gamelan music with an introduction to Javanese culture.

 

Traditional and Composition Workshops

  • Learning traditional Javanese gamelan music and exploring the instruments to create new music.

 

Music and Dance Workshops

  • Learning traditional Javanese gamelan music and dance.
  • Participants will divide into two groups to learn gamelan and dance and then rotate in order for everyone to experience both music and dance.
  • Ideally two rooms are required for this workshop.

 

Music and Shadow Puppetry Workshops

  • Learning traditional Javanese gamelan music and shadow puppetry with an introduction to Javanese culture.
  • Learning to make shadow puppets.
  • Participants will divide into two groups to learn gamelan and puppetry and then rotate in order for everyone to experience both music and puppetry.

 

Children, Young People, and Adults with Learning Difficulties Workshops

In Service Training/Teacher Training

  • Suitable for teachers who are preparing to teach gamelan and Indonesian culture to their class or to beginner gamelan groups.
  • Teachers are given some hot tips about how to teach gamelan music in an effective way.
  • Teachers learn to play the gamelan instruments, learn some traditional music and also explore how they can imitate the sound of the gamelan instruments using diatonic instruments (instruments available in the classroom).
